Fractional ablative lasers are the modern and sophisticated approach to the older Dermaroller and Dermabrasion concept.
Fractional Resurfacing Laser
Laser skin resurfacing involves use of a laser technology to create thousands of microscopic holes in your skin. Your skin responds by trying to “heal” the artificially created “wounds” and produces fresh tissue (namely collagen) which fills out the lines and wrinkles. Additionally, the tissue heat generated by the laser leads to the shrinkage and remodelling of the existing collagen. These tissue changes help in improving textural defects in the skin – from treatment of open pores to fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, stretch marks, traumatic scars and/or post-surgical scars. At the end of your treatment, your skin will feel smoother and more “ironed out”. Fractional ablative lasers are the modern and sophisticated approach to the older Dermaroller and Dermabrasion concept. The penetration achieved by the laser is deeper, more even, and the results are more consistent. There have been ample clinical studies carried out over the years – in pork skin, then Caucasian skin and later in Asian skin types. There is plenty of clinical and histological evidence that fractional resurfacing does indeed work. At Skin.Health, we offer four laser devices under this technology – 1. The Alma Harmony XL Pro Pixel Laser (Fractional Erbium:YAG 2940 nm laser), 2. The Skinnovation Fraxis Duo Microneedling Radiofrequency device, and 3. The Skinnovation Fraxis Duo Fractional Carbon dioxide Laser 10600 nm. We also offer 4. Alma Pico Clear Laser, which has the additional advantage of breaking down and eliminating unwanted pigmentation in a safe and non-ablative manner.
The Pico laser and Microneedling treatments are ‘non-ablative’. They are generally safer in darker skin tones, have a faster recovery time and give good results for superficial and minor scarring. These lasers also have the added benefit of mild skin tightening and lifting. The Erbium:YAG and CO2 laser are ‘semi-ablative’ lasers which are far more powerful and give better results for deep scars and stretch marks. However they generally require a longer recovery period.
You will need around 4-6 treatments done at 4-6 weekly intervals. For fine lines and open pores, 3 treatments are generally sufficient. For acne scars, you may need 3-6 treatments depending on the depth and type of scars you suffer from. For stretch marks and burn scars, you may need 4-8 treatments, depending upon the nature and depth of your scar. Your doctor will put you on a de-tanning and exfoliating skin care regimen for 4-6 weeks prior to the treatment. This is necessary to prepare your skin for the treatment, as this will allow your skin to heal quickly and efficiently during the downtime.
Your doctor will apply an anesthetic (numbing) cream on the area to be treated. A gentle adhesive tape is then placed over it to allow the cream to penetrate deeply. The cream will stay on your skin for 60-90 minutes before starting the treatment. If you use the cream, you do not feel any pain at all during the procedure. You may feel a sensation of heat on your skin, towards the end of the treatment. Very high laser energies are used to treat stretch marks and burn scars, especially if you have light skin. In such cases, the treatment will cause pain and discomfort despite the use of skin numbing creams.
The procedure takes 30-40 minutes to complete. Photographs will be taken before each treatment. After procedure, your skin will show some redness and swelling for 1-2 days. Then you will notice skin flaking, bronzed/ribbed appearance and peeling from day 3 to day 5. For 1 week after the treatment, you should strictly follow your dermatologist-recommended post treatment skin care regime. If you are on medication for any medical problems or if you get herpes (cold sores) ulcers on your lips, you must inform your doctor before-hand.
You will see some improvement after the first session itself, though most people really appreciate the improvement 2 weeks after the second treatment. By the end of 4th session, there will be noticeable improvement. You can see a 50-80% improvement depending upon the indication (best results for fine lines and wrinkles, modest improvement in stretch marks).
