Blue Laser for Acne

Skin.Health Advanced Dermatology Center introduced Spains’s Primelaze Milesman Blauman Blue Laser, for the first time in Bangalore, in late 2023.

Although this device has multiple applications, it is most commonly and most famously used for the treatment of active acne.

Non-inflammatory acne mostly involves comedones (blackheads & whiteheads) and papular acne – which are the smaller red bumpy acne. Inflammatory acne involves pus filled acne, nodular acne & cystic acne.

Inflammatory acne do not respond very well to anti-acne skin care products or antiseptic-based gels alone. They have traditionally been treated with oral antibiotics given for 3 to 16 weeks. Oral antibiotics are not a suitable choice for everyone. Some patients are allergic to antibiotics, some complain about digestive disturbances, and some others cannot take antibiotics as they are pregnant or nursing.

Oral Retinoids are the gold standard to treat chronic severe & stubborn acne. But women who take this drug should strictly avoid pregnancy for the 3-6 months that they are on this medication. And they should continue to avoid pregnancy for a few months after completing the course as well. The dryness, mood swings and hair loss caused by Isotretinoin can also be a put off for many patients.

In some other cases, we have had patients coming days before an important social event – with pus filled and inflamed acne – looking for a speedy resolution.

And on some days, we come across severe inflammatory acne in juvenile patients – in whom we hesitate to prescribe long courses of oral antibiotics and Retinoids. While chemical peels may not always be safe to perform in kids under 16, the Blue Laser can be safely used in the treatment of juvenile acne as well.

The Blue Laser is a novel 445 nm wavelength which has anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. This device has proven efficacy in the treatment of Grade II-III Rosacea as well, as it targets Oxyhemoglobin and can coagulate the dilated capillaries and tiny blood vessels that keep feed the oil glands. In doing so, it can help in controlling the flushing episodes and persistent facial redness noted in Rosacea.

This device is safe to use in all skin colours, and the treatment can be performed on pregnant and nursing mothers as well, without any risk. It can be effectively combined with chemical peels, and it can be safely used on patients who are already on antibiotics or Retinoids.

The ablative handpiece of this device allows us to also treat minor benign dermal skin lesions like skin tags, warts, milia, syringomas and cherry angiomas. Blue laser can be safely used to remove such lesions in patients who have a pacemaker and cannot be treated using Radiofrequency devices. It is also less likely to scar and pigment the skin – compared to the surgical C02 laser.

Combining blue laser to your acne treatment regime can help in minimizing the need for oral medication and sometimes, side-stepping it altogether. Unlike gimmicky “treatments”, the Blue Laser has over 5 decades of studies and data to prove its excellent efficacy and safety in treating various Dermatological conditions. The Blue Laser has shown proven antibacterial effects against bacteria like Propionibacterium, Staph infections of the skin, E.Coli and even antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria like Pseudomonas.

Although it has been used widely by Dermatologists in the West, it has only recently been explored by Indian Dermatologists, with only a hand-few specialists being trained in the use of Blue Laser for the management of Acne & Rosacea.
