Avoidance of Dust Mite
Aim to reduce the amounts of dust mites in the home
Major Strategies (WHO Recommendations)
Wash bed sheets, pillow covers and quilts regularly (every 1-2 weeks) with hot water if possible, to kill mites.
Dust mites grow and multiply easily in warm, humid places. They prefer 70 degree F with relative humidity above 40%. Hence install air conditioners and clean the filter often.
Additional Strategies
- Use a good quality vacuum cleaner, if possible one fitted with HEPA filter.
- Use a damp duster when dusting and cleaning surfaces.
- Do not use carpeting.
- Dehumidify the room by closing bathroom door, avoiding water leakage from pipes and avoiding fish tanks in the living room.
- Select dust-proof beddings
- Remove/reduce curtains and soft furnishings in the bedroom. Use synthetic screen curtains. Regularly change sofa or furniture covers.
- Remove fur toys and stuffed toys from the bedroom. Wash them in hot water or freeze them in a kitchen deep-freezer to kill house dust-mites.
- Do not allow pets in the bedroom.
- Get rid of piled papers.
- Reduce wall hangings. If any, clean it regularly, both front and back.
- Dry mop the floor once a day.
- Exposing mattresses, rugs, carpets and curtains to direct strong sunlight for more than three hours, kills all mites.
